ABOUT ME
After years in finance, technology, and nonprofit arts management, I've returned to my passions of drawing and painting. Having lived in several beautiful places including the Bay Area, Maui, and the Tetons, I returned to my native state of Connecticut. I love being a part of the culturally rich shoreline in Madison, where I enjoy the abundant opportunities to create, and show my work.
PAINTINGS
What we perceive as real and what we imagine as possible is different for each of us. The fine line between perceived reality and imagination, including the dream world, is where I feel compelled to explore, as an artist. I begin painting by trying to empty my mind of words and concepts, to allow my paintings to evolve spontaneously. My process includes applying and removing layers of paint, water and medium. Along the way, I discover textures and imagery that represent the energy of perception. I'm drawn to the organic forms of wood, rocks, shells, water and the natural phenomena of space, time, temperature, light, movement, stillness and color. I am fascinated by the visible and invisible forces of nature. Nothing I paint is static. My paintings may be seen as 'mindscapes' that may suggest form and may feel familiar, but are not necessarily of the visible world.
PORTRAITS
My intention is to capture the essence of each animal, or person through their eyes. I work closely with my clients to select the right photos from their collection, or do a photoshoot for them. Beginning with the eyes, I always start with a light sketch, and "build" the drawing using a variety of different weighted graphite pencils. The final portraits are rendered in a classic, black and white, realistic style on archival paper.
