I fell in love with drawing in first grade when I was captivated by a classmate’s crayon drawing of a horse. With his permission, I copied his horse until I could draw it on my own. This began my creative journey of learning how to make art, and exploring different mediums. With some formal training, but mostly self-taught, I have been a practicing artist my whole life.
Over 22 years ago, when a friend in Jackson asked me to do a portrait of his dog, my artistic interest began to focus on animal portraiture. I discovered the joy of creating works of art that have deeply personal and lasting value. Over the years, I have drawn hundreds of portraits of dogs, cats, children, and horses. More recently I have added adults to the list as well.
My intention is to capture the essence of each animal, or person through their eyes. I work closely with my clients to select the right photos from their collection, or do a photoshoot for them. Beginning with the eyes, I always start with a light sketch, and "build" the drawing using a variety of different weighted graphite pencils. The final portraits are rendered in a classic, black and white, realistic style on archival paper.
Having grown up in Connecticut, I attended art school in the bay area, then moved to Jackson Hole, WY in the early 70s where I skied for several years. After studying finance at the University of Wyoming, I moved to the east coast to work on Wall Street. Further corporate work took me to London, and back to San Francisco before returning to Jackson in 2001. In 2014, I moved to the 'quiet side' of the Tetons, where I enjoy working from my home studio in Victor, ID, with my dog, Tuck, by my side.
