Having grown up in Connecticut and attended art school in the bay area, I moved to Jackson, WY in the early 70s. I then studied finance at the University of Wyoming, and moved to the east coast to work on Wall Street. Further corporate work took me to London, and back to San Francisco before returning to the Tetons and Jackson in 2001. I moved to the 'quiet side' of the Tetons in 2014. Recently retired I am now able to devote my time to painting and commissioned portraiture in my home studio in Victor, ID.
PORTRAITS
My intention is to capture the essence of each animal, or person through their eyes. I work closely with my clients to select the right photos from their collection, or do a photoshoot for them. Beginning with the eyes, I always start with a light sketch, and "build" the drawing using a variety of different weighted graphite pencils. The final portraits are rendered in a classic, black and white, realistic style on archival paper.
PAINTINGS
What we perceive of as real and what we imagine as possible are different for each of us. The fine line between perceived reality and imagination, including the dream world, is where I feel compelled to explore, as an artist.
I begin painting by trying to empty my mind of words and concepts, in order to allow the painting to evolve spontaneously. My process includes applying and removing layers of paint, water and medium. Along the way, I discover textures and imagery that represents the energy of inner thoughts. I am fascinated by the visible and invisible forces of nature - space, natural forms, water, movement, and light. Nothing I paint is ever static. My paintings may be seen as 'mindscapes' that feel familiar, but are not of this world.
